Connect2Dorset's Review on the Evolving Care Sector
The social care sector continues to evolve rapidly, shaped by new policies, shifting budgets, and changing workforce dynamics. Over the past year, professionals across the sector have witnessed significant developments that are influencing recruitment, retention, and day-to-day practice. In this blog, one of our talented team member has shared their perspectives on key trends, challenges, and opportunities shaping the social care market today. Whether you’re currently seeking your next role or looking to understand the broader landscape, these insights offer valuable guidance for navigating this dynamic environment.
What changes have you observed in the social care market over the past year?
Brandon:
I have to agree with my colleagues—the introduction of the DfE statutory guidance has been one of the most significant changes in social care, not just in the past year but arguably in the last five years. I would strongly encourage all social workers to speak with an expert in the social care market. A clear understanding of the guidance is essential to ensure they find the right opportunities and aren’t misled by inaccurate or incomplete information.
In what ways have changes to local authority budgets affected recruitment in the past year?
Brandon:
Children’s social care remains active in seeking experienced practitioners, although there has been a noticeable increase in permanent recruitment. Some contract roles are now shorter in duration compared to a year ago, which makes it even more important to speak with your talent partner. They can walk you through the expectations and details of each role to ensure it’s the right fit.
What advice would you offer to practitioners currently looking for their next role in social care?
Brandon:
The biggest piece of advice I can offer is to build a personal connection with the talent partner you choose to work with. For me, many of my candidates really value the fact that they can pop into the office for a coffee and have an open conversation about the support we provide. That personal relationship creates trust, makes communication easier, and ensures you feel genuinely supported throughout your job search.
Looking ahead, what do you believe will be the most significant change in the social care sector over the next year?
Brandon:
It will be increasingly important for workers to have a clear understanding of their experience, as this will directly influence the opportunities available to them. I also anticipate that more social workers may choose to transfer their skills and experience into adult social care, rather than remaining specialists solely within children’s social care.
